Maddux narrowly avoids third consecutive loss




Greg Maddux had a shaky outing, allowing 11 hits and 6 runs over 6 innings, but the Chicago Cub bats awoke after the 7th inning stretch, scoring 7 times over their final 2 frames to get Maddux off the hook.

The Chicago (NL) Cubs scored 4 runs in the 8th inning and nipped the Montreal
Expos 8 to 7 at Wrigley Field in a hard fought contest.

Chicago (NL) came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 8th
inning scoring 4 runners on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Ron Cey who made
the crowd come alive when he doubled plating all three baserunners. Montreal
threatened in the 9th but Chicago (NL) was able to put down the rally.

The victory was credited to Lee Smith(7-2) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Smith got relief help from Drew Hall who gained credit for his 1st
save. Tim Burke(7-3) absorbed the loss in relief. He allowed 5 runs and 3
hits in 1 inning.

Maddux loses second straight




Going up against the team with the best record in baseball, Greg Maddux falls for the second straight start. Even though some of the Mets bigger names were not in the lineup, there some pretty sick cards with Dave Magadan, Manny Trillo and John Gibbons all getting starts. It will be interesting to see how the rookie responds to adversity...

In a close game it was the New York (NL) Mets 5, the Chicago (NL) Cubs 3 at
Shea Stadium.

Rick Anderson(5-0) had a fairly solid outing. He surrendered 7 hits and 1
walk in 5 innings. Chicago (NL) threatened in the 9th but New York (NL) was
able to put down the rally.

Roger McDowell earned the save, his 25th. The loss was charged to Greg
Maddux(1-2). He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Gene Michael was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of
loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all professionals. We've
been through this many times - it's the nature of the game. We'll be fine -
as for me - I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'

Maddux gets his first loss




Greg Maddux again struggled early, giving up 3 runs in the first three innings, but settled down to throw seven solid innings. Unfortunately, the Cubs could only muster three hits and Maddux is saddled with his first career loss (1-1).

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Chicago (NL) Cubs at Three Rivers Stadium by
the score of 3 to 2.

Pittsburgh started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of
the first plating 2 runs on 2 base hits. Barry Bonds led off and he slapped
a base-hit. Bonds took off for second and slid in with a stolen base. Bobby
Bonilla then was hit by a pitch. Johnny Ray followed and he doubled. Sid
Bream came to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases. One out later,
Tony Pena was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Jim Morrison
came to the plate and drew a walk. Neither team managed to score after the
4th inning.

Stan Fansler(1-0) got the win allowing 2 runs in 8 innings. Pat Clements got
the save, his 8th. The loss was charged to Greg Maddux(1-1). His ERA
ballooned from 2.25 to 3.00 as he allowed 3 runs in 7 innings.









Maddux gets win in first career start




Greg Maddux got the victory (1-0) after going 7 innings against the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium. Maddux gave up 4 hits and 2 runs in the first two innings, but once he got over his rookie jitters, settled down and pitched well the rest of the way. Lee Smith pitched the ninth to get the save.
